Hub-and-Spoke Network Game: How Many Journeys Can Ten Cities Make?

You are on an airline's network planning team. You have five aircraft and ten cities on the map. How should you connect them so that your passengers can reach the most destinations?

In the Hub-and-Spoke Network game, you first link the cities in pairs with direct flights, then connect the same cities through a hub airport in the middle. The city-pair counter shows the difference instantly: the same ten cities offer five journeys in one structure and fifty-five in the other.

The game takes about five minutes. It starts with a briefing, continues with a two-round mission, then short questions and a fictional decision point, and ends with a debrief that sums up what you have learned. Every good call earns flight hours and moves you up the ranks. At the end, you can share your result card.

The game is based on the hub-and-spoke topic of the Airline Management 101 series. To learn the topic in depth, watch the episode video inside the game; watching it doubles the flight hours you earn on that flight.

How to play?

  • Round 1: Tap two cities in turn to open a direct route between them. You have five aircraft, and each city can be on only one route.
  • Round 2: Switch on the hub, tap each city to link it to the hub and watch the counter speed up.
  • Questions and decision point: Correct answers earn flight hours; a wrong answer uses fuel, but the flight goes on.
  • Debrief: Review what you have learned, collect your badge and share your result card.
  • Use the TR / EN button at the top right to switch languages.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a hub-and-spoke network?

It is a network structure in which an airline gathers its flights at a hub airport and distributes them from there to other cities. By connecting at the hub, a passenger can reach many cities on the network.

Why does the game end up with 55 city pairs?

Each of the ten cities is linked directly to the hub, which makes ten city pairs. These ten cities also connect with each other through the hub, which makes forty-five more. Total: 10 + (10 × 9) / 2 = 55.

Does a hub-and-spoke network have a cost for the passenger?

Yes. Passengers often change aircraft at the hub, which can make the total journey longer. The airline, in turn, serves far more city pairs with fewer aircraft.

Do I need to sign up to play?

No. The game opens in your browser and needs no registration or download.

Are my flight hours and rank saved?

Your flight hours, rank and daily streak are stored only in your own browser. When you come back on the same device and browser, you continue where you left off. Clearing your browser data resets them.

Can I play on my phone?

Yes. The game is designed to work on phones, tablets and computers.

Does this game replace a course?

No. The game is a supporting learning material designed to reinforce the topic; it does not replace textbooks or the instructor's teaching.
