Between the same two cities, a single airline flies on one airport pair while several airlines compete on another. So where and how does an airline position itself in competition?
On this short flight accompanying the fourth episode of the Airline Management 101 series, you apply the five forces model at route level, test cost leadership, differentiation and focus strategies and airline business models, and decide the competitive position of a fictional start-up. When you complete the flight, you earn the Strategy Pilot badge and add another star to your badge board.
How to play?
Briefing: You learn the route of the flight and your mission.
Mission: You place the cards under the forces of existing rivals, suppliers, buyers, new entrants and substitutes, then test the Positioning School, entry barriers, being stuck in the middle and the airline within airline model with short questions.
Decision moment: Looking at a fictional start-up's business plan, you choose the generic competitive strategy it follows. Every good call earns flight hours; a wrong call costs fuel, but the flight goes on.
Video bonus: If you watch the episode video from inside the game, the hours you earn on that flight are doubled.

No. The organisation and the situation in the decision moment are entirely fictional.
